Britain, in response to the mocking remarks by Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, in which he referred to this country as an “Islamic Republic” in an interview, said the remarks were “completely unacceptable.”

A British government spokesperson said: “These remarks are completely unacceptable, and we have raised the matter with the Israeli government.”

Earlier, David Menser, a spokesperson for the Israeli government, had apparently tried to play down the importance of Netanyahu’s remarks in an interview with BBC Radio.

Menser said Netanyahu was quoting something that someone else had said. By pointing out that JD Vance, the vice president of the United States, had previously made “such remarks,” he added: “He was quoting the vice president’s words.”

In a lengthy podcast interview with the country’s army radio, Netanyahu called Britain “Britain’s Islamic Republic” and said that it would become the first “nuclear Islamic Republic.”
