Copernicus Climate Change Service of the European Union says August was the hottest month ever recorded last month.

According to this report, the hottest month in history had previously been July 2023.

The data from this European body show that the average global air temperature in the past month reached 16.96 degrees Celsius, the highest monthly average global temperature recorded to date.

Samantha Burgess from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, which oversees the Copernicus service, said that humans in at least the past 100,000 years have not experienced temperatures as warm as the current ones.

She said the global temperature has risen 1.65 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial level and 0.85 degrees above the average of the years 1991 to 2020.
