Investigations by Germany’s intelligence services into an attempt to blow up a Ukrainian cargo plane at Leipzig/Halle Airport have reached Russia’s military intelligence service.

The newspaper Welt am Sonntag reported that the investigation found that a person believed to be an officer of the GRU was behind the logistics of the entire operation. The same information prompted the German government to hold Russia responsible for the attempted terrorist attack using a drone.

Based on sources close to the investigation, the suspects in the case are a Russian national and a Belarusian national.

Accordingly, it was announced that the Russian suspect organized the preparation and logistics of the operation. Prosecutors say he entered Germany via Turkey and later left for Serbia after traveling from Berlin Brandenburg Airport.

German security officials, when he arrived, knew that this Russian national was linked to the GRU, but after his entry they did not impose any monitoring on him. Welt am Sonntag wrote that he is now probably in Russia.

What led investigators to the suspects, among other things, were DNA traces found on the antenna structure used to control the drones.

Russia has denied any involvement.
