Germany’s foreign ministry spokesperson said the government of this country views Donald Trump, the U.S. president, as the latest plan for Gaza as an opportunity to make progress toward the disarmament of Hamas.

Speaking at a press briefing in response to a question about the rejection of the plan by Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, he said some differences of opinion were to be expected.

The spokesperson for Germany’s foreign ministry added: “In such a complex action, it was completely clear that many, many questions would remain unanswered.”

Netanyahu on Sunday, at the start of the cabinet meeting, said: “Israel does not accept the 15-point document.” He added that Israel’s army would not withdraw until Hamas is truly disarmed, and that his meaning of disarmament includes “heavy weapons, lighter weapons, all weapons.”

The 15-point “peace team” plan led by the United States, in its first phase, focuses on heavy weapons, military production sites, weapons stockpiles, and Hamas’s network of tunnels.
