Israel reacted angrily to a speech by Emmanuel Macron, President of France, at the United Nations General Assembly—remarks in which he condemned the situation in the West Bank.

Benjamin Netanyahu’s office, Israel’s prime minister, said that “the ridiculous nonsense” of Macron’s remarks was “shocking.” The reaction in particular referred to the part of Macron’s remarks in which he said that the Palestinian Islamist organization Hamas “has never” operated in the West Bank.

Netanyahu’s office, using the biblical name for the West Bank—captured by Israel in 1967 during the Six-Day War—announced: “Hamas terrorists carry out attacks against Jews almost every day. They have murdered countless Israeli civilians in Judea and Samaria.”

The office of Netanyahu also referred to the latest deadly attack on a Jewish settler in the West Bank, shortly before Yom Kippur, the most important Jewish holiday. According to the statement, the victim was the father of six children and, in addition to Israeli citizenship, also held French citizenship.
