🔸People in the Syrian city of Idlib on Tuesday, 20 Mordad, took to the streets following the issuance of a death sentence for Bashar al-Assad and several other officials of his government, waving Syrian flags and distributing sweets in celebration.

🔸This happened after a criminal court in Damascus on Tuesday, 20 Mordad, sentenced Bashar al-Assad to death in absentia for the crimes of “war crimes and crimes against humanity.”

🔸This was the first Syrian conviction against Assad, after his regime was brought to an end in Azar 1403, following the swift, several-day advance of rebel forces led by Ahmad al-Shar‘ from the Idlib region toward Damascus.

🔸The criminal court in Damascus also sentenced the former dictator’s brother, Maher al-Assad, and their cousin, Atef Najib, who is referred to as “one of the direct officials responsible for suppressing the people,” to death.
