🔸Researchers in Bolivia’s cloud forests have identified an unknown species of wild feline; the first newly discovered living species from the cat family that is officially named and described after more than a century.

🔸This small felid, which local communities call “tilcayo,” lives in the mountainous and humid forests of Yungas. Its body length is about 46 centimeters and its weight is about one and a half kilograms, making it smaller than a typical domestic cat.

🔸By examining genetic data, researchers confirmed that the animal is a distinct species and chose the scientific name Leopardus tilcayo for it.

🔸There is still little information about the lifestyle of this species. The remains of small rodents found in stool samples suggest they likely form part of its diet, and images from camera traps also indicate that this felid may be more active at night.
