In a climate in which scattered remarks by Iranian government officials about the effects of war and sanctions on the economy have been under severe criticism by their governing rivals, a new message—cited as being from Mojtaba Khamenei—has recently been released. In it, he asks officials that if they speak about the state of the country, they do so specifically within the framework of the “power narrative.” The message, published on the occasion of “Government Week,” emphasizes: “Sometimes, stating honestly our own weaknesses, when the enemy needs morale, is a great help to him.”

The publication of this new message comes while, amid a worsening of economic crises in Iran, a group of supporters of the foreign policy of the Islamic Republic has been highlighting an unconventional narrative: that citizens’ day-to-day livelihood problems have little to do with war and sanctions. They draw the conclusion that, to address economic challenges at home, there is no need for difficult decision-making in the foreign arena.
