The two-month deadline set in the “Islamabad understandings” ended today, Monday, 26 Mordad, without reaching a final agreement between Iran and the United States. Ismail Baghaei, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic, today, at a press conference, rejected the existence of a 60-day deadline in that understanding and said: “In the text of the memorandum of understanding, there is no item titled a 60-day deadline, and the Islamic Republic of Iran has never set its policies under pressure, ultimatums, or time-based deadlines.”
According to him, what was outlined in the understandings was a 60-day period for talks on two axes—“lifting sanctions” and “the nuclear issue”—and if no result was reached, it would have been possible to extend it. The U.S. newspaper “The Wall Street Journal” has also reported that over the past two months, the Islamic Republic, instead of placing its trust in the path of negotiations with the United States, has devoted its capabilities to preparing for a wider conflict with the United States and Israel.
“Ata Mahammad,” a collaborator with IranWire, says that the signs indicate that “we are moving further along the path of higher tension.”
This interview was broadcast in full in the afternoon news on Monday, 26 Mordad, on “IranWire TV.”
