The U.S. Department of Justice is preparing to revive a mechanism known as “maritime prize courts,” an initiative pursued with the goal of facilitating the seizure of Iranian oil tankers and converting the oil and other cargoes from the seized ships into U.S. assets.

According to Bloomberg, three people familiar with the plan said that reviving these courts is part of the Donald Trump administration’s efforts to strengthen Iran’s naval blockade and to offset part of the costs of the war.

Under a proposal that has not yet been finalized, U.S. federal prosecutors could have a faster pathway to assert ownership claims over oil and other shipments seized from ships belonging to an enemy—or even ships from neutral countries. If the seizure is approved, the confiscated goods will be sold, and the proceeds will be transferred to the U.S. Treasury.
