The U.S. Navy is reviewing a redesign of future aircraft carriers of the Ford class so their appearance better matches Trump’s tastes and the style of aircraft carriers from the World War II era.

The most important proposed change is moving the command island forward.

Trump has also ordered an assessment of whether electromagnetic catapults can be replaced with older steam/steam-powered systems.

U.S. Navy officials have warned that these changes could cost billions of dollars, delay the construction of the ships, and reduce their operational effectiveness.

The current location of the command island on the Ford carrier was designed to improve the movement of aircraft on the deck and increase safety during landing.
