For many years, an overwhelming majority of Americans have wanted to make daylight saving time permanent, but no administration had been able to do it properly—until today. I’m proud to announce that the House of Representatives has passed this bill and it has now gone to the Senate for final approval.

People are tired and fed up with having to change their clocks twice a year. This is foolish, annoying, and in some cases extremely costly. It costs millions of dollars to create it for cities and states that have watchtowers and hard-to-reach areas. Recently, arguments have also been made that this clock change is harmful to human health due to the anxiety it creates.

Credible medical, criminological, and economic studies have shown that ending the twice-a-year clock change and having an extra hour of natural sunlight in the evenings will help reduce the rates of theft and murder, reduce traffic accidents (especially accidents involving pedestrians!), lower the risk of heart problems, strokes, and seasonal depression, make the route home safer for children from school, increase time spent with family, provide serious support for extracurricular activities, bring a remarkable boost to sports, fitness, tourism, retail, and the restaurant industry (and more!), and reduce the cost of energy bills because everyone will benefit from an extra hour of daylight. In other words, keep it just as it is now and never change it again.

This is something Republicans, Democrats, and independents can unite on. I urge Republican senators to pass the Sunshine Protection Act as quickly as possible. Thank you for your attention to this matter!
