🔻Washington Post: The deadly attack on a wedding ceremony in Iran was likely caused by an error involving an American bomb

The Washington Post newspaper wrote in an exclusive report on Sunday that initial investigations show the deadly attack on a wedding ceremony in Kohestak, a city in southern Iran, likely occurred when one of six guided bombs released from U.S. Navy fighter jets did not hit the designated target.

According to the paper, the six American munitions were intended to strike a communications and telecommunications complex near the venue of the ceremony, but one of the bombs veered off target and hit a building where the wedding ceremony was taking place.

The Washington Post, citing a person familiar with the details of the operation, reported that the initial assessment by the U.S. military indicates the incident occurred as a result of an “impact error,” not “the deliberate targeting of the building where the ceremony was held.”

The report was published while the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) had previously announced that it was investigating reports regarding civilian casualties in the attack. U.S. officials said the final result of this review has not yet been released.
