The ongoing clashes in the region have once again brought Iran’s economic relations with its neighbors in the Persian Gulf under the spotlight.

Iran has economic relations with all six member countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council, though the volume and nature of these relations vary greatly. The United Arab Emirates accounts for the bulk of Iran’s trade with the region, while Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia have smaller and more limited economic ties with Iran.

The importance of the Gulf countries to Iran goes beyond bilateral trade. For years, this region has been a hub for Iranian businesses and financial networks that are trying to find a way to operate under Western sanctions.
