The New York Post reported that a digital traffic billboard on Los Angeles’ 405 freeway was hacked and a website address for the Persian-language site “Gorgakon” was displayed on it; a site that publishes the names, photos, and in some cases personal information of opponents of the Islamic Republic.

The billboard is located near Westwood, one of the main hubs of the Iranian community in Los Angeles. The California Department of Transportation has confirmed the display of an unauthorized message and said that checks of access history to the system are ongoing. The identity of the perpetrator or perpetrators of this action is not known.

Some reports have linked “Gorgakon” to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, but that connection—as well as the connection between the billboard hack and the Islamic Republic—has not been independently confirmed.

The incident took place at the same time as an FBI warning about cyber targeting of opponents, activists, and journalists by actors linked to the Iranian government. The FBI said these actors use malware to access information about targeted individuals and attributed activity related to one of these malware programs to Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence.
