🔻 Conversation between the foreign ministers of Ukraine and Iran in New York

Andrii Sybiha, Ukraine’s foreign minister, said that on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, he met with Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s foreign minister.

According to Ukraine’s foreign minister, the purpose of the meeting was “reciprocal steps to prevent further escalation of tensions between the two countries,” and the two sides discussed this.

In a post on the social media platform X, Sybiha wrote that he and Araghchi “agreed to keep existing communication channels open,” adding that they “discussed the situation in the Middle East and Europe, as well as the various ongoing efforts toward peace.”

The Ukrainian foreign minister said that in the meeting he “re-emphasized Ukraine’s position in support of establishing peace and stability in both regions as soon as possible.”

Relations between Kyiv and Tehran have deteriorated sharply after allegations that Iran has supplied Shahed drones to Russia. On the other hand, Tehran has recently accused Ukraine of attacking an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, which led to the summoning of Ukraine’s chargé d’affaires to Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Tehran called it an “hostile and criminal” act.
