Fourth Criminal Court in Damascus on Tuesday sentenced Waseem Assad, the cousin of Syrian deposed President Bashar Assad, to death.
According to reports by Syrian state media, the court convicted him of premeditated murder and torture during the nearly 14-year war in the country, which it said “falls under crimes against humanity and war crimes.” The court also ordered the seizure of the convicted man’s movable and immovable property in favor of the state treasury.
With this ruling, Waseem Assad becomes the first member of the Assad family to be tried in person and convicted. Bashar Assad and his brother Maher Assad were also sentenced to death last week in a trial held in absentia.
More than half a million people have been killed in Syria’s civil war and more than 13 million have been displaced.
