Huge Roman building unearthed in Budapest – but what was it?

Archeologists are trying to solve the mystery of a massive Roman building which has been unexpectedly unearthed in Hungary's capital, Budapest – and wondering how such a large structure remained hidden for so long.

Discovered at the former Óbuda Distillery site, now a major housing development, the building is around 40% intact despite two millennia of continuous habitation.

The narrow structure extends several hundred meters parallel to the Danube, featuring a corridor with two long walls leading to a northern polygonal tower; its southern limit remains unknown.

To add to the confusion, experts seem convinced that it was built by the military – but not for a military purpose.
