🔻The arbitration body of the English Premier League accepted that VAR, in confirming Erling Haaland’s winning goal for Manchester City against Manchester United, had an «officiating error».

According to Pro Ref, VAR should have advised the referee to review Enzo Fernandez’s involvement in the offside position from the touchline.

🔹The striker scored at minute 60 at Old Trafford, by putting in Yosko Guardiol’s cross into the far corner, but the assistant referee initially ruled out the goal for offside.

🔹After the assistant referee’s video intervention, the goal was accepted, because the images showed that Patrick Dorgu’s foot kept Haaland in an onside position.

🔹However, the main debate was whether Enzo Fernandez—who was in an offside position and had dived closer to the center of the goal to reach the ball—affected play at the time.

🔹Pro Ref said in a statement: «It was established that Enzo Fernandez did not make contact with the ball, and therefore the decision about the offside offense depended on the referee’s judgment. However, in this incident, VAR did not recognize the possible impact of his position and should have advised the referee to review the scene from the touchline.»
