Hungary’s parliament has elected András Baka, the former head of the Supreme Court, as head of state with a largely ceremonial role; a move that is seen as part of Prime Minister Péter Magyar’s efforts to dismantle Viktor Orbán’s political legacy.

Baka criticized Orbán’s government and said: “One party has taken over the state,” and that the system of checks and balances has stopped working.
