In the oil cleanup operation on Qeshm’s shores, absorbent pads are used to collect oil stains. These pads are usually made of synthetic fibers such as polypropylene and absorb oil and grease, while taking in less water.
Absorbent pads can, by quickly collecting oil, prevent the spread of the spill on the water and the contamination reaching fish, sea turtles, seabirds, and corals, reducing damage to shores and piers.
However, absorbent pads alone are not sufficient to deal with large-scale oil spills and are usually used alongside oil containment booms, skimmers, suction equipment, and other specialized cleanup methods. Saturated pads must also be collected and disposed of appropriately.
