The Israeli website WallaNet, in an analysis, wrote that the Islamic Republic is facing one of its most complex crises, and that the collapse of the rial’s value, the costs of war, U.S. pressure, and the increase in domestic dissatisfaction have undermined the foundations of the regime’s legitimacy.

According to WallaNet, the rial’s value falling to up to 200 million rials per dollar and severe inflation have increased economic hardship and what it called the “trust agreement” between parts of society and the government in exchange for economic stability is being eroded. The outlet suggested that this situation could lead to another round of protests.

This analysis, according to WallaNet, pointed to the killing of Ali Khamenei and what it described as the Islamic Republic’s failure to take revenge for him as factors behind the growing dissatisfaction among part of the regime’s supporters. According to WallaNet, efforts to advance negotiations have also, among some hardline supporters, fueled a sense of the government’s weakness.

WallaNet also said that the intensification of the enforcement of mandatory hijab is a factor in the spread of dissatisfaction, and wrote that economic, political, and social pressures have widened the gaps—from the government’s opponents to parts of the Islamic Republic’s traditional base—deepening the legitimacy crisis.
