Ratko Mladić, the Bosnian Serb war criminal convicted, died at the age of 84 in the United Nations prison hospital in The Hague, Netherlands.

Known as the “Butcher of Bosnia,” in 2017 he was sentenced to life imprisonment for committing genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity during the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia in the years 1992 to 1995.

After the end of the Bosnian war, Ratko Mladić was on the run for 16 years until he was finally tracked down and arrested in 2011 in a rural area in Serbia. He was then put on trial in a court in The Hague, the Netherlands.

Three months ago, a court affiliated with the United Nations in The Hague rejected its request to have him released from prison. His lawyers described his physical condition as dire and, because he was nearing the end of his life, requested that he be freed from prison.

The judge had accepted that his condition was critical but ruled that he would receive full care and medical treatment in prison.
