The U.S. State Department announced that it has agreed to issue visas for the main members of the Iranian delegation and key staff accompanying them to attend the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York next week.

Citing a U.S. State Department spokesperson, Associated Press reported that “in line with our obligations as the host country, the Iranian government’s main delegation will be able to attend the high-level weeks of meetings of the United Nations General Assembly.”

The spokesperson added that the Iranian delegation will be smaller than last year and will be subject to travel restrictions and a ban on the purchase of luxury goods.

AP, citing sources, reported that Masoud Pezeshkian, the president of Iran, is expected to travel to New York. Previously, the United States had refused to issue visas for Mahmoud Abbas, the head of the Palestinian Authority, and other Palestinian officials to attend this UN summit.

Meanwhile, a U.S. State Department spokesperson emphasized that the U.S. government will not allow the Iranian delegation to move freely in New York as it did last year.
