Trump and Rodriguez announced a deal over control of Venezuela’s massive oil reserves
🔸 Donald Trump, the U.S. president, said the United States has reached an agreement with Venezuela under which the control of the majority of more than 65 billion barrels of the country’s proven oil reserves will be handed to the United States.
🔸 On Friday, Mr. Trump, in a post on the Truth Social social network, called the deal “the biggest oil deal in the history of the world” and said implementing it would more than double America’s oil reserves and, in the long term, would lead to a reduction in gasoline prices for American citizens.
🔸 The U.S. president said the agreement was reached with the cooperation of Delcy Rodriguez, the interim president of Venezuela, and with the participation of private companies, and that Marco Rubio, the U.S. secretary of state, and Pete Hegseth, the U.S. secretary of defense, took part in the negotiations.
🔸 Ms. Rodriguez also welcomed the deal and called it “historic,” a deal that, according to her, “will have a remarkable impact on our country’s rebirth.”
🔸 She said its implementation would attract 100 billion dollars in private-sector investment and would come with more than 209 billion dollars in tax revenue for Venezuela’s treasury.
🔸 The details of the deal—including the mechanism of “majority control” of the oil reserves, the private companies involved, the timing of investments, and its legal terms—have not yet been released.
