🔸 Water level of the Caspian Sea at its lowest point in 200 years

The head of the Mazandaran Department of Environment Protection, referring to the effects of climate change on the Caspian Sea, said it has experienced an unprecedented drop in water level.

According to the Young Journalists Club, Mohammadreza Kanaanī, on Thursday, 22 Mordad, said in a conversation with reporters: “Over the past two decades, the temperature of the Caspian Sea has increased by about one and a half degrees, and this has increased the amount of evaporation by between 10 and 15 percent.”

Kanaanī added: “Based on existing trends, the water level of the Caspian Sea decreases annually by about 10 to 20 centimeters, and under current conditions, the Caspian Sea is at its lowest water level within roughly the past 200 years.”

The Caspian Sea is considered the largest enclosed body of water in the world, and its water level depends on the balance between water inflow from precipitation and rivers and its outflow through evaporation.

Mohammadreza Kanaanī considered water inflow and evaporation as two effective factors on the water level, and said that the increase in temperature and evaporation has caused the Caspian Sea’s water balance to become negative.
