Ali Motahari, deputy speaker of the tenth Majles, in a letter to Masoud Pezeshkian, called for oversight of how women and men dress in the streets, and suggested that items such as “body display, short sleeves, and using shapewear instead of pants” for women, and “wearing shorts” for men, be discreetly placed “under supervision and reprimands.”

In this letter, Motahari said that the way the government deals with the law on “modesty and hijab” and Pezeshkian’s positions on hijab have led to the impression in society that there is no longer any oversight of clothing. He asked Pezeshkian to publicly announce that the issue of dress is important to him and that supervision in this regard will continue.

Motahari also called for the continued implementation of dress regulations in government offices and universities.
