The Pakistani foreign ministry described claims that Field Marshal Asim Munir, the commander of the Pakistan Army, during his recent trip to Iran “acted on behalf of the President of the United States or at the direction of the United States” as “misleading.”
Pakistan has taken on the role of mediator in the dispute between the United States and Iran. The Pakistani government says the trips of Asim Munir and Mohsin Naqvi, the interior minister, to Tehran were also carried out within this framework, and the Pakistani delegation met with senior Iranian officials during that trip.
Tahir Andarabi, a spokesperson for the Pakistani foreign ministry, said at a weekly press conference in Islamabad that the trip was carried out within Pakistan’s “mediating role” and was part of the country’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to help end tensions between the United States and Iran, as well as support for fresh efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
