Bloomberg reported that, following pressure from the administration of Donald Trump, a speech by Mohammad Eslami, the vice president and head of the Atomic Energy Organization of the Islamic Republic, was prevented at the general conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna.

According to a U.S. official, Eslami was due to speak at the conference on Monday, but Austria did not agree to the UN-requested sanctions exemption that would have made it possible for him to enter the country. The official said Austria’s decision was taken after a request from the United States.

Bloomberg added that a representative from the Islamic Republic may speak at a lower level at the conference later in the week, but Eslami would not be able to attend and deliver his speech at the beginning of the session.

Meanwhile, Chris Wright, the U.S. Secretary of Energy, is scheduled to emphasize Washington’s position at this conference that the Islamic Republic should not obtain nuclear weapons.

Based on excerpts from Wright’s speech text, he will ask the Islamic Republic to fully cooperate with the Agency, carry out its safeguards obligations, and provide the necessary access to enable the Agency to carry out its duties.
