CNN, citing three sources, reports that General Dan Kinne, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the United States Armed Forces, has told senior officials of Donald Trump’s administration in recent weeks that Washington should find a “way out” for a war with Iran.

According to these sources, General Kinne believes that available military options for escalating the war may backfire and that relying on airstrikes alone is unlikely to achieve Donald Trump’s stated goals.

CNN says General Kinne has shared his concerns with officials including John Ratcliffe, the CIA director, Marco Rubio, the foreign secretary, and J.D. Vance, the vice president.

Based on this report, these officials are trying to clarify the limits and consequences of the available military options for him before meetings with Mr. Trump. So far, Mr. Trump has shown no inclination to send ground forces to Iran and has instead focused more on using airstrikes to push Tehran to accept the deal he wants.
