🔶 Denmark welcomes agreement to grant permanent control of Greenland security to the United States

Denmark has welcomed the “binding” agreement announced by Donald Trump, the U.S. president, under which Washington will take on “permanent” control of Greenland security and will prohibit the deployment of Russian and Chinese bases in this polar territory.

According to Agence France-Presse, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, Denmark’s foreign minister, said that “next week could be a good week” because the agreement is set to be signed on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York—an issue that had previously been confirmed by Denmark and Greenland.

In a message on social media, the Danish foreign minister wrote: “We hope that a long period of uncertainty gives way to a binding agreement that strengthens security in the Arctic region and the North Atlantic Ocean.”

Rasmussen added that the agreement, which he said “respects Denmark’s red lines,” is of great importance given changes in security conditions.
