🔻Doug Ford, Ontario premier, installed a large sign along Canada’s coastline, sending a message to Donald Trump: “Lake Ontario. Now and always.”

The U.S. president signed an executive order on Thursday seeking to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” and shared a set of AI-generated videos about a lake that covers both countries.

Mr. Ford said: “Long before President Trump, this lake was called Lake Ontario.”

The verbal spat began after the collapse of trade talks, and the United States imposed new 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods. Canada will impose “dollar-for-dollar” tariffs next month (September).

Trump immediately called the order renaming Lake Ontario “in effect” after signing it.

While he has broad authority over how the United States recognizes historic places, other countries are not required to follow suit. Canadian officials have rejected Mr. Trump’s action.
