In Africa's first Shaolin temple, kung fu provides more than just fitness

Red and gold oriental-style buildings, brightly coloured ceremonial dragons and children practicing martial arts under the watchful eye of an instructor.

It may feel like China, but this complex, located on the outskirts of Zambia's capital Lusaka, houses Africa's first Shaolin temple.

Many students come from underprivileged backgrounds and the compound has become their school, training ground and home.

"They are helping Zambian children, vulnerable children, those who like orphans who don't have any support," says 26-year-old student Robert Mwale.

The early-morning routines and kung fu practice has become a sensation on social media platforms TikTok and Douyin.
