🔸 Increase in flights by unidentified drones over Germany’s military centers

According to the German military, the number of recorded observations of unidentified drones over the country’s military facilities has increased in recent years.

The spokesperson of the operational command of the German Army told the Germany editorial network that: “Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, which violates international law, the number of reports concerning observations of drones in connection with the German Army has increased significantly and has been stabilized at a high level.”

The spokesperson added: “In total, over the past years, several hundred cases of possible drone flights over facilities belonging to the German Army have been reported.” According to him: “These reports primarily concern individual drones, but sometimes they also include drone groups.”

The German Army spokesperson warned that the security environment and conditions in Germany and Europe have fundamentally changed over the past years. According to him, Germany faces combined threats every day such as the spread of misinformation, cyberattacks, espionage, or sabotage.

In the latest case, it was announced last week that two drones were spotted over a military base in “Münschnisch” located in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. According to the German Army, handling of this case has been assigned to the police.

Also last week, the discovery of an explosive-equipped drone and a detonator at Leipzig/Halle Airport, near Ukrainian cargo aircraft, sparked controversy. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office of Germany has taken charge of the investigation into this case.

Alexander Deubarnit, Germany’s interior minister, in response to the Leipzig airport incident, announced that the number of personnel of the Federal Police drone countermeasures unit will be doubled. Accordingly, in the future, instead of 150 forces, 300 operational personnel will be made available to the Joint Drone Countermeasure Center (GDAZ) to counter drone threats.
