A very significant drop in the water levels of rivers in Germany—especially in major transport arteries such as the Rhine and the Danube—has created major problems for commercial shipping.

Many cargo ships can only carry a small fraction of their usual capacity. This has increased transportation costs and, in particular, has harmed industrial sectors that rely heavily on heavy freight transport.

Industry figures in the chemical sector had already warned about the likelihood of reduced production, and economists also see the country’s weak economic growth as further at risk.
