🔶 Kallas’ emphasis on freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz; criticism of executions and crackdowns in Iran

Kaja Kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief, announced in a post on the social media platform X that she met with Abbas Araqchi, the foreign minister of the Islamic Republic, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York.

In her message, Kallas referred to discussions about “diplomatic prospects for ending the war between the United States and Iran and fully reopening the Strait of Hormuz,” and wrote: “Before the war, there were no additional charges or costs for passage, and after the war there should also not be any.”

The EU foreign policy chief, referring to the situation of ship traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, added: “Shipping must be free and unhindered both in the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.”

At the end of her message, she also referred to the situation of human rights violations in Iran, writing: “I also raised the issue of domestic repression in Iran, including the sharp increase in executions and death sentences.”
