Kepler company data shows that commercial ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz fell sharply at the end of the week after an attack on three vessels managed by Abu Dhabi’s National Oil Company, and was almost halted.
According to Reuters, on Saturday only five cargo vessels crossed the Strait of Hormuz, and for Sunday, 25 Mordad, no crossings were recorded; whereas the number of vessels crossing at the end of the previous week was 31. Reuters wrote that some vessels may have passed through the waterway with their tracking systems turned off.
Before the start of the United States and Israel’s war against the Islamic Republic in Esfand, more than 130 ships crossed the Strait of Hormuz each day, and one-fifth of the world’s crude oil and liquefied natural gas shipments were transported via this route. Abbas Araghchi, the foreign minister of the Islamic Republic, said that the resumption of shipping would depend on Washington’s acceptance of Tehran’s conditions regarding the Strait of Hormuz.
