🔶 Landmarks in Budapest go dark following reduction in nuclear power plant output

In the wake of an energy crisis caused by a severe heatwave and a lack of water for cooling nuclear power plants, the famous landmarks of Budapest are no longer illuminated at night. The Hungarian government has announced that its only nuclear power plant is operating at just 12% of its actual capacity due to the drop in the water level of the Danube.

In Budapest, the city’s nighttime view has changed for residents and tourists. The neo-Gothic Parliament building, Buda Castle, and the Chain Bridge—among the capital’s most important symbols—fade into darkness at night.

The measure is part of an energy-saving plan, implemented after a sharp reduction in electricity generation at the country’s clean nuclear power plant.
