Lebanon’s parliament, on Tuesday, 20 Amordad (August 11, 2026), approved a draft law to abolish the death penalty in a historic vote.

With this decision, Lebanon officially became the first country in the Arab world and the Middle East region to fully remove this punishment from its criminal laws.

International organizations such as Amnesty International and the European Union described this move as a historic step. (It should be noted that since 2004 Lebanon had effectively suspended the implementation of death sentences.)
