🔶 Man accused of attack on Germany’s high-speed train was charged with attempted murder

The Düsseldorf public prosecutor’s office announced that a 20-year-old man is accused, in connection with an attack on a high-speed train near Siegburg, of attempted murder.

According to the indictment, the accused, who is from Aachen, in April threw two soft-air grenades into one of the high-speed train cars, after covering his face with a balaclava; a car in which a large number of passengers were present.

The prosecutor’s office says that after that, he attempted to attack several passengers with a knife.

According to the prosecutor’s office, the knife attack was stopped through the intervention of a passenger and a railway employee. However, the grenade explosions caused 10 people to be injured, though superficially.

Based on an assessment by a psychiatric expert, the accused was found criminally responsible for his actions. His motive is still unclear, but the prosecutor’s office said that suspicions of the attack having a political motive have not been confirmed.

The accused is a German citizen.
