Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State, said on Wednesday, First of Mehr, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, that there is broad consensus among the countries in the region regarding Iran as a “destabilizing force.”

Rubio said Iranian proxy groups have threatened neighboring countries over the past years, and countries on the Persian Gulf’s coast and other countries in the region emphasize the need for the Strait of Hormuz to remain open and for any attack on it to be prevented.

The U.S. foreign minister added that these countries oppose Iran’s acquisition of nuclear weapons, and many of them support U.S. sanctions and economic pressure on Tehran.

According to Rubio, Washington is closely coordinating with these countries—countries that, as he said, can both play a role in applying economic pressure on Iran and are themselves directly affected by and threatened by Tehran’s actions.
