Meta was sentenced to pay $567 million over allegations of creating a “public nuisance” for children

🔸A state court in the United States ordered Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, to pay a fine of $567 million and impose restrictions on certain features of these two social networks regarding users under 18.

🔸The judge in the case in the U.S. state of New Mexico said that Meta exposed children and teenagers to danger by creating a “public nuisance.”

🔸This ruling, issued on Thursday, 15 Mordad, adds to Meta’s $375 million fine in the same case that had been issued in March following the jury’s verdict. At that time, the jury found Meta responsible for making teenagers vulnerable to predatory abusers and sexual predators on its platforms.

🔸Meta has said that it will appeal the ruling.

🔸The case has gained further significance at a time when dozens of U.S. states have also filed similar lawsuits against large social media companies, accusing them of harming children and the mental health of teenagers.
