🔶 Narges Mohammadi: Iranians are paying a very heavy price for war and economic problems

Narges Mohammadi, a prominent Iranian human rights activist, says, referring to a year and a half of war with the United States and Israel, that the continued U.S. sanctions, along with economic poverty and domestic repression, have left no “room for breathing” for the people of Iran, and that Iranians are suffering and living in hardship.

The 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, in an interview with the Associated Press, says that the people of Iran are grappling with multiple crises stemming from the ongoing war and growing economic pressures, and that it is indeed they who are “paying a very heavy cost.”

Mohammadi, who is currently being held outside prison on bail for medical reasons, says in this interview that silent resistance by the people against the Islamic Republic is continuing. She adds: “If you go to the streets, you will see a wave of resistance among the people, and a wave of awareness and their determination to stand up in order to reclaim their rights.”

She further says that state repression has intensified, but that many people in the younger and newer generations “know their rights” and are standing firm.
