🔻Saudi Arabia confirms Houthi missile attack on Riyadh
🔻Saudi Arabia has confirmed that the Houthis in Yemen tried to target Riyadh, the capital of the country, with a ballistic missile.
This is the first attack on Riyadh since fighting with the Houthis intensified.
Previously, the Houthis, using missiles and drones, targeted “sensitive” sites in Riyadh, the Saudi capital. Saudi Arabia says the missile launched at Riyadh was “tracked and destroyed.”
However, the Associated Press has reported that some residents of Riyadh heard explosions and later also saw a column of smoke near the airport.
Agence France-Presse also reported that in Riyadh on Saturday it heard two devastating sounds of explosions, and its reporters saw a fuel tank belonging to the Aramco oil company near the airport that was on fire.
Fighting between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis has entered a new phase. The Houthis control a large part of Yemen and have recently also seized nearby coastal cities adjacent to the Bab al-Mandab strait and its islands.
On Saturday, the United States warned that fighting between Saudi Arabia and Iran-backed Houthis could “rapidly intensify.”
