🔻Syria: We reached an understanding with Russia about the future of the Hmeimim and Tartus bases

Syria says it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Russia regarding the future of two Russian military bases. Under this memorandum of understanding, these military facilities are set to be converted into joint training and preparation centers within three months.

The official Syrian news agency (SANA), citing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that the Russian military bases and facilities at Hmeimim Airport and the port of Tartus, within the framework of “a new agreement that preserves mutual interests,” will be turned within three months into “joint training and preparation centers.”

The naval base in Tartus and the Hmeimim air base are two of Russia’s major military bases in Syria.

After Latakia, Tartus is Syria’s second-largest port on the Mediterranean Sea.

The Hmeimim base is located about 20 kilometers southeast of Latakia.
