The Tehran Prosecutor threatens legal action over “immoral offenses” in cafes
🔸On Monday, 26 Mordad, the Tehran Prosecutor said that “serious” action will be taken against “violations and immoral offenses” in some cafes and restaurants in Tehran.
🔸According to Mizan, the official news agency of the Islamic Republic Judiciary, Ali Salehi also said at a meeting of the Supreme Judicial Council that similar action will be taken against shops that, according to him, sell “improper clothing.”
🔸In the terminology of officials and media outlets of the Islamic Republic, “improper clothing” refers to clothing that does not comply with Islamic dress code (hijab).
🔸In recent weeks, reports have been published about an increase in crackdowns on some shops and cafes on the grounds that they do not comply with mandatory hijab.
🔸This comes as, on Sunday, the head of the Social Affairs Center of the Tehran Provincial Governorate announced that around three thousand cafes are operating across the province of Tehran and, according to him, “more than 450,000 person-hours of the province’s young people’s time are spent every day in these venues.”
