🔻 TOEFL and GRE tests suspended in Iran; Duolingo not available to residents of Iran

The support center of ETS Europe, the organizer of TOEFL tests, told BBC Persian that it has suspended conducting TOEFL and GRE tests in Iran due to “U.S. sanctions” being put on hold.

The center said that Iranians can still take the TOEFL and GRE tests outside Iran.

At the same time, Duolingo, in response to BBC Persian, confirmed that the company’s English language test will not be available to users in Iran, both inside and outside the country.

Duolingo said that “Iranian citizenship” is not automatically a barrier to taking the test, and that if an Iranian citizen is outside Iran and has an official identification document issued by another country, they can still take Duolingo’s English test.

These restrictions have been applied after a new round of U.S. sanctions against Iran.

Washington has suspended indefinitely the so-called General License “G,” which since 2014 had allowed certain academic exchanges and educational services for Iranians.
