U.S. Treasury Secretary: All foreign flights of Iranian aircraft will be halted from the first of Mehr
🔸The U.S. Treasury Secretary says that all Iranian airlines will be “shut down worldwide” starting September 23 (the first of Mehr), and that Chinese officials have also had “very active” involvement in the campaign of economic pressure by the United States on Iran.
🔸Scott Bessent, on Monday, Khordad? (30 Shahrivar) in an interview with CNBC, said: “When Iranian planes land at an airport, you can’t provide them with fuel or airport services and you can’t sell them tickets; otherwise you will be taken out of the dollar system.”
🔸The Treasury Secretary’s reference is to the application of secondary sanctions against all Iranian airlines as part of the economic pressure campaign on Iran known as “Operation Economic Exclusion.”
🔸On Tuesday, 17 Shahrivar, the U.S. Treasury Department had announced that it had sanctioned “all remaining Iranian airlines” that until then had not been subject to sanctions.
🔸At the time, Scott Bessent had warned “anyone who does business with Iran’s remaining airlines”: “You are at risk of being cut off from the global financial system.”
🔸Since the announcement of these sanctions, reports have been published about the start of the process of suspending flights of Iranian airlines in several countries.
🔸On 25 Shahrivar, Mahan Air, in a statement, announced that it had suspended its flights to Turkey and Oman until further notice.
🔸Earlier, it had also been reported that flights to Georgia would be stopped starting 30 Shahrivar.
🔸On Monday, some Iraqi media outlets reported the decision of the government of that country to suspend all flights between Iran and Iraq from Tuesday. The Iraqi government has not officially commented on this.
🔸In his new remarks, Scott Bessent referred to a meeting he had with He Lifeng, the deputy prime minister of China, and said that he discussed with him the issue of imposing sanctions on Iran.
🔸He reported that the United States is conducting constructive talks with Chinese financial officials, including “Pan Gongsheng,” the head of the People’s Bank of China, about compliance with U.S. sanctions against Iran.
