🔻As tensions rise between Rome and Madrid over the issue of migrants, Spain has also begun controls at the border with Italy in a reciprocal move.

Spain’s decision to suspend for one month border freedom of movement for passengers from Italy applies not only to nationals of third countries, but also to its own Italian citizens.

Last week, Italy announced a similar temporary measure for passengers entering from Spain.

Italy and Spain are both Schengen-area countries in the European Union, where there is usually free movement across their borders without passport control.

But after the widespread influx of migrants from Morocco to Ceuta (Ceuta in Spanish), on Spanish territory in North Africa, Italy restored border controls with Spain.

This sudden surge has concerned a number of EU member states, which have called for tightening control at the borders.
