Canada issues new sanctions against several officials and entities in the Islamic Republic

🔸On Wednesday, September 23, the Canadian government announced new sanctions against several senior Iranian officials and government entities in the Islamic Republic.

🔸In a statement, the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the individuals and entities were targeted due to their “role in suppressing violent actions by the people of the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

🔸The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Canada said the sanctions target five senior security and government officials of Iran and five state entities, but it did not provide further details about them.

🔸The ministry said: “These individuals and entities have been involved in Iran’s efforts to suppress opponents and restrict the fundamental freedoms of the people of this country, including through digital surveillance, censorship, unlawful violence, arbitrary detention, and intimidation.”

🔸The protests of Dey 1404, which quickly spread across the country, are described as one of the largest popular uprisings in the history of the Islamic Republic.

🔸Iranian officials have said the number of those killed in these protests is more than 3,700 and have attributed the violence to “organized terrorist acts” carried out by the United States and Israel.

🔸However, human rights groups based outside Iran have reported a higher number of deaths than this figure and have accused security forces of directly shooting at protesters. Canada says that since 2002, it has imposed a total of 24 rounds of sanctions against 237 individuals and 265 Iranian entities.
